Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, yet it is also one of the most preventable and, when caught early, treatable forms of cancer. As part of our commitment to preventive healthcare within the University of Lagos community and beyond, we're using this observance to raise awareness on what everyone should know.
The Silent Progression
One of the biggest challenges with lung cancer is that early stages often present no noticeable symptoms. By the time signs such as persistent coughing, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or shortness of breath appear, the disease may have already progressed. This is why awareness and routine check-ups matter more than most people realize.

Smoking remains the leading cause, responsible for the majority of lung cancer cases globally
Secondhand smoke exposure, particularly in shared living or work environments
Occupational exposure to substances such as asbestos, radon, and certain industrial chemicals
Air pollution, an increasingly significant factor in urban environments
